Human Factors and Human-Centric Risk Management

Recently, we have heard a lot of discussions around technology as it relates to risk management, particularly with regards to Artificial Intelligence based systems and approaches. Whilst such platforms and technologies undoubtedly have the potential to enhance risk management processes, there remains a foundational element that we need to remain cognisant of….the human factor. Indeed, regardless of the potential efficiencies that technologies have to offer, the simple fact remains that the human interface with risk management is critical for any system to work effectively – be it from an implementation or interpretation perspective, to name just two.

With this in mind, this Journal is dedicated to human factors/human centric risk management. I am proud to say that the articles presented in this edition are concerned with a number of different subject areas, and originate from a number of different disciplinary backgrounds – illustrating the range and complexity of the issues involved.

Rapid technological change is here to stay, and with that comes a range of opportunities to be explored, and potential exposures to be managed. As risk leaders, we must ensure that the human factors involved with risk management maintain a prominent position in the manner in which we establish, implement and maintain any management system, risk or otherwise. Whilst some may say the human factor is the weakest link in the chain, I believe it is the strongest due to the degree of adaptability and resilience that cannot be duplicated by technology. Although technology-based methodologies may be more reliable, the human element provides a greater sense of agility – a commodity that will continue to be crucial in the VUCAD (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous and Digitised) environment in which we find ourselves…but this needs to be actively understood, appreciated and facilitated.

I trust you will enjoy the articles presented in this Journal.
